Yorkshire Energy loves the Tour de Yorkshire
The 2019 Tour de Yorkshire is in town! Team Yorkshire Energy are excited to see Yorkshire’s Biggest Bike Race showcasing the best our county has to offer. If the support out on the roads is anything like it was last year, we suspect the TdY could be Yorkshire’s biggest party too!
Some of our team are lucky enough to be out on the roads over the coming days following the race. For our Energy Experts in the office working hard to keep the lights on, we’ve put together our expected highlights of this year’s race.
The TdY has attracted some of the biggest names in world cycling, including multiple Tour de France winner Chris Froome and legendary sprinter Mark Cavendish. Our top tip to win the men’s race? It’s got to be last year’s winner Greg Van Avermaet.
It’s not all about the men though. Some of the biggest names in women’s cycling are at the TdY, including Yorkshire’s very own Lizzie Deignan. Keep an eye on Anna van der Breggen, Marrianne Vos and Annemiek Van Vleuten too, who’s our pick for the women’s race. The two-day women’s race covers the exact same route as the men’s race on both Friday and Saturday and is set to offer some exciting battles. We’re pleased to see equal prize funds too – chapeau TdY.
Riding in her home county, we managed to catch up Team GB’s Anna Docherty after today’s race, here’s what she had to say
‘It was a “brutal race”. The biggest riders in the world were there, who really wound up the pace towards the finish of the World Championship course in Harrogate. The support is always fantastic in Yorkshire. It was great to see so many school kids out lining the course too, hopefully they’ll be inspired to take up cycling to develop the next generation of riders’
Yorkshire has some seriously steep climbs for the riders to tackle, with French prefixes as a nod to the TdY’s Tour de France Grand Depart origins. We’re looking forward to a good battle on the Cote de Grosmont!
"The climbs are steeper than airport coffee"
Last year’s incredible support was applauded by riders from around the world. The roads were lined with large crowds and loud cheers from start to finish – we hope supporters do Yorkshire proud once again.
The race snakes out into both the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors – the most beautiful countryside in the world (in our Yorkshire opinion!). As a green electricity supplier, we’ll be getting excited if they pass any wind or solar farms on the way!
Towns and Cities
The race passes through some of Yorkshire’s finest towns and cities, including Harrogate, the seaside towns of Bridlington and Scarborough and of course our hometown – Leeds!
